As they found a calm place in the hills. A british man named Hugh Poyntz Malet, who worked for the government in Thane, Maharashtra found Matheran in 1850.

From Mumbai : The roadway journey from Mumbai is short and it will take you minimum 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Matheran Hill Station. Once you get on to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, take exit towards Khopoli  SH 35. If you are Travelling from Public transport than you need to catch train from any central railway station towards khopoli and get down to Neral.

From Pune : Take the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and exit at Khopoli and get on to the old Mumbai-Pune highway, NH4. Ride towards Chouk Village and keep on going until you reach the base of Matheran Hill. This journey takes almost 2-4 hours as per your driving capability.

From Neral Railway Station :
 1. By Toy Train/Mini Train : You can take the scenic toy train journey from Neral railway station east to Matheran Top. The toy train route provides memorable views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
 2. By Walking : If you like hiking, there is a trek trail from Neral to Matheran Top the time taken is around 2.5-3 hours to complete. This option is only for adventure lover and trekkers who can walk-climb longer for hours.
 3. By Rickshaw/Taxi : From Neral railway station east, you can take a rickshaw or taxi to the entry point to Matheran Hill Station. From entry, you can either walk, take a electric auto rikshaw ride or a horse ride into Matheran main town market area, as motor vehicles which make pollution are not allowed inside the matheran hill station.
