1. Gorakhgad Fort History

It was used by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Maratha empire and subsequently captured by the British in the early 19th century. The main use of this fort was as a watchtower to keep an eye on the surrounding regions and served as an important strategic location during that time.

It takes  around 2-3 hours to reach the top, also the give time is estimated as it totally depends on the starting point and individual pace.

3. How to reach Gorakhgad Fort
From Road Ways:
  • Public transport – If you are coming from Mumbai then you can reach to kalyan by central local railway and from kalyan railway station get down at west and move towards the state transport bus depot which is almost 100mtr. away from station, there you can have a inquiry of the buses moving towards your destination which is dehri village the starting point, also you can hire a private cab or taxi from there.

             For those who are coming from Pune need to follow the same instruction once after reaching                 at Kalyan railway station from train or any other means of transport.

4. Spots to visit on the Fort
  1. At the starting point you will find Gorakshanath temple.
  2. After climbing up from the entrance carved in the rock of Gorakhgad.
  3. There are three water tanks.
  4. A huge cave carved in the rocks of Gorakhgad.
  5. Right in front, under the courtyard, two giant trees leaning in a terrible valley.
  6. The ‘Machhindragad’ or Machindra pinnacle in front create an infinite spectacle of the magnificent performance of nature.
  7. There are a total of fourteen water tanks on the plateau of Gorakhgad. But out of them, the water in the water tank near the cave is drinkable.
  8. The trek to Gorakhgad is not complete without reaching its top to exprience the plesant atmosphere and view.
  9. There are 50 steps carved in the rock which you need to climbt and reach at the top. Be cautious and careful while climbing those steps.
  10. Small plateau at the top of the fort which is very small.
  11. There is a temple of Mahadev on top. And there is a Nandi right in front.
  12. From the top, you can see variou natural beauty surrounded around like Machhindragad, Siddhagad, Jivdhan near Naneghat, Ahupeghat and deep valley.
5. Architecture on Gorakhgad Fort

1. Via Kalyan:- If you are coming via Kalyan then the above Public transport point will help you the best. 

2.  Via Murbad Milhe:-
You should come to Dehri village via Murbad – Milhe route. From this village, you can reach the fort via a very easy route.     

 3. Siddhagad to Gorakhgad
        There is also a trail from Siddhagad to Gorakhgad. Many of the trekkers use this path while trekking from Siddhagad towards Gorakhgad. You will experience a dense forest on this path. Siddhagad is the nearest connected fort, one should take the Murbad-Narivli route. Narivli is the base village of  Siddhagad.

         After staying at Siddhagad for a night, one should descend to Siddhagad early in the morning to reach Gorakhgad via link trail route. There is a small temple of Mahadev on the plateau and there are also two Samadhyas. Since the path ahead from here is on a steep cliff, Its better to take precautions and be cautious put your every step carefully. After walking for few time we will reach the gate carved in the cliff. It takes three hours to reach the fort top from this route.

       4. Via Khopivali:-
        From Murbad –  towards Dehri village via Mhasa village, 2 km away from Dehri is Khopivali village. From here, a dirt path leads to Gorakhgad. There is an ashram on this path. This path is also easier than other paths. It takes 2-2.30 hrs to reach the fort top through this route.

7. Is Gorakhgad Open Everyday

Yes this fort is open every day and at any time of the day as there is no security check post or any gated security. So you can plan your journey any time and in any season. Also it will be better to get the current information of the fort while planning during monsoon season as there might be some restrictions put on by state government due to Natural calamities.

Yes you can camp on gorakhgad fort as there are various spots from the base towards the top to built your tent. It will be better to carry your own tent as there won”t be anyone who can provide it to you at or nearby the fort.

9. Best time to visit Gorakhgad

Any season will be good to visit gorakhgad but you need to travel during week days to avoid getting rush of weekends.

Monsoon will and add onn cheese on your plan as you can experience various beautiful scenic views surrounded waterfalls and lushy greenary these would give your exploration a vibrant feel.

Winter will be best for those who don’t like get out and make yourself wet during monsoon.

Summer will be littel challenging as their might be lot of heat and humidity in the climate so it will be better to start early in the morning or a night trek during hot season.

10. Is food and water available on Gorakhgad

It is always better to carry your own tiffin and liters of water bottle while trekking and travelling as the local food or hotels wont give you the proper healthy diet which you require while ascending and decending from the fort. There is only option available at base as there is a small shope which can provide you with the water and food but they should be informed prior as ready made food won’t be available on the spot.

On the fort there is only 1 water tank out of 14 in which the water is little bit good for drinking, so it will be better to carry enough amount of water to avoide dehydration issues.

11. What to pack and carry for Gorakhgad Trek
  • Water Bottle (Minimum 3 -4 litres)
  • Trekking shoes or the one with proper grip.
  • Full sleaves clothes.
  • Basic First Aid kit.
